Free Reading Assessments
Take a FREE reading Assessment
Like our reading program, LearnUp reading assessments are fast—just 20 minutes. And they’re FREE. Our proprietary assessment process quickly puts the student at the correct entry point and on the path to success.
Who should be assessed?
Anyone of any age, with or without a diagnosis of dyslexia. But particularly if your child:
- is very bright, but is struggling with school work
- hates to read
- is clearly reading below grade level
- has been diagnosed with dyslexia or other reading challenges
- has been recommended by school staff “to get some support and help”
- gets distracted or is ‘acting out’ when asked to read
Our reading survey shows us if your child will benefit from our reading program and it will help you understand what next steps you should explore for your child. The assessment does not diagnose dyslexia, but will often reveal underlying reading issues associated with dyslexia.
The assessment gives us a baseline of where your child is in the reading progression and what reading and comprehension skills she needs to acquire in order to become a grade-level reader. The assessment also shows us what entry point (LearnUp has five entry points or ‘Starts’ as we call them) your child would be placed in if she were to enroll in our programs. In addition, the assessment will give us a good idea of how many tutoring sessions your child will need in order to achieve her reading goals.
Many of our students come to LearnUp after undergoing a lot of tests and assessments. The last thing your child wants to do is sit for another long test. And she shouldn’t have to. Our assessment is very kid friendly and short. Steve Tattum, reading expert and founder of LearnUp’s reading program, personally conducts the reading assessments. Steve has created a simple, child-friendly reading assessment tool. During the assessment, your child will read a progression of words and paragraphs that go from simple to complex. The words and passages reveal a reader’s strengths and challenges.
During the meeting, Steve will go over what he found during the assessment, discuss appropriate next steps are for your child, and explain, if your child were to enroll in LearnUp, how we would address existing reading issues.
LearnUp reading assessments are a free public service. Our goal is to help parents get clarity about their options so they can make the best decision possible for their child. It has been our experience that after the assessment, some children will decide to enroll in LearnUp, some have not needed reading intervention and others have chosen to follow a different pathway.
Appointments are available most afternoons from 3:00 to 6:00 pm. Assessments are held in Malloy Hall on the University of San Francisco main campus. Parents typically stay in the room during the assessment.
